Dr Phil Hammond – Medicine
Phil Hammond started his medical career by being a general practitioner as well as one specialising in sexual health. He was also lecturing at the Universities of Birmingham (where he was voted Teacher of the Year) and Bristol, training medical students and doctors to communicate better with patients.
His journalism, broadcasting, writing and campaigning have tried to help patients and carers hope better with illness, life, the NHS and how to seek the right care.
He now specialises in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/M.E, post-viral fatigue and long Covid. He has twice been voted as one of the Health Service Journal’s top 100 clinical leaders.
Dr Phil Hammond – TV & Radio
Phil has taken his skills and knowledge of medicine and made it easier for the general public to understand and consume. His first sitcom, Doctors and Nurses, was broadcast on BBC in 2004, and since then he has appeared in a number of TV and radio shows.
He presented Trust Me, I’m a Doctor (2015-) for the BBC, which encouraged patients to be more involved and assertive in medical situations, and was also a presenter for BBC Radio Bristol with Dr Phil’s Saturday Surgery.
His radio credits also consist of Pillories of the State, Struck Off and Die, 28 Minutes to Save the NHS, The News Quiz, The New Show, The Music Group, The Motion Show, Dr Phil’s Bedside Manner and Polyoaks.
He has also guest-starred on a number of panel and quiz shows, including Have I Got News For You (1990-), Question Time (2011-), Countdown (2021) and The One Show.
Dr Phil Hammond – Writing
Phil is the medical correspondent for Private Eye, where he broke the story of the Bristol heart scandal in 1992 and gave evidence to the subsequent public inquiry, as well as covering NHS whistle-blowers and the COVID-19 pandemic. His writing has been so well-received that in 2012, he was shortlisted for the Martha Gellhorn Prize for Journalism.
He has written a number of medical books as well as memoir-style books, including Trust Me, I’m a Doctor, Medicine Balls: Consultations with the World’s Greatest TV Doctor (2008), Trust Me, I’m Still a Doctor (2009), Sex, Sleep or Scrabble? (2010), What Doctors Really Think (2014), Staying Alive (2015) and Dr Hammond’s Covid Casebook (2021).
Dr Phil Hammond – Comedy
As a comedian, Phil was half of the award-winning duo ‘Struck Off and Die’ with Tony Gardner. Together, they won a Writers’ Guild Award, a Silver Sony Award and received record numbers of complaints to the Broadcasting Standards Council.
Alongside his medical career, Phil has performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival numerous times and also completed UK-wide tours. He was twice nominated for the Perrier award at the Edinburgh festival, and the duo were twice selected for the Perrier Pick of the Fringe.
His critically-acclaimed shows have included 28 Minutes to Save the NHS, 59 Minutes to Save the NHS, 89 Minutes to Save the NHS, Dr Phil’s Rude Health Show, Confessions of a Doctor, Games to Play with Your Doctor and Dr Phil’s Health Revolution.
